Muslin Bags

So, in an effort to have less plastic in my life, I have undertaken a project.  Yes, indeed I am making drawstring bags out of muslin to use for produce and bulk goods at the store.  In addition, I'm sure they'll come in handy when packing for my trips this summer.  Interested in trying?  See the instructions below.

1.  Cut a piece of fabric the width (plus seam allowances) you want and twice the length (plus seam allowances) you want.
2.  Fold the top edges under by 1/4 inch and stitch along the edge.
3.  With right sides together, sew up the sides using a 1/2 inch seam.  On one side, stitch all the way to the top.  On the other side, stop 1 1/2 inches from the top.
4.  Pink edges and press the side seams open.
5.  At the top, where the side seam is open, stitch around the opening on each side.
6.  Fold the top over by 3/4 inch.  Stitch all the way around to close the drawstring enclosure.
7.  To make a string, cut a 1 inch strip of fabric the length you want your drawstring.  Press in half, then press each half in half again.  Stitch to close.
8.  Feed drawstring through and tie knots in each end of the string.
